As you drive down the winding roads of the Golan Heights, overgrown grass and wildflowers stretch from the roadside to as far as the eye can see, meeting the foothills of the mountains. Nimrod Fortress looms
over the land on its mountain top. You
can tell from below that it is incredibly large, but you really get the feeling
for its vastness when you walk amongst room after room of ruins. My imagination soars as I imagine the people
that had once lived here; drank from the giant, beautiful cistern, and ate in
the huge, open halls. The fortress takes
its name from the biblical figure Nimrod, who was said to have inhabited that
mountain top.
The view from the keep down into the fortress, which could've housed an entire city.
A few different views into the magnificent water cistern.
The view from atop the water cistern looking out to the keep.
The ancient writings behind Jeremy give us clues as to who held the fortress and in which era.
Vast rooms inside the fortress; I imagine for dining... or for knights' councils to meet and deliberate!
Beautiful archways crumbling after thousands of years of existence.
Jeremy can see me from afar! I'm the red dot peeping through the window in the tower!
The view from the prison, looking at the keep. This is on the West side, whereas the water cistern is due East of the prison.
Jeremy looking up from the cold, dark prison through the only small window they had.
My shadow, looking down into the prison!
I love the way you describe your adventures! Looks like another one for the books! Glad you guys are having fun.
ReplyDeleteI love the history you are incorporating into the story. Nice fall Jeremy! Where to next after the Kibbutz?
